Aomori’s PPAP Bread: Pineapple Flavor, Apple Shape, Total Confusion
About ten years ago, there was a short video that somehow became a worldwide hit.
In the video, a man with shiny gold clothes and a punch-perm hairstyle dances with strange little steps while saying:
“I have a pen…”
The video has been viewed more than 180 million times.
Have you ever seen it?
The English in the video is simple enough that Japanese junior high school students could probably understand it.
You understand what he is saying.
And yet, somehow, you do not understand what is happening.
It is a mysterious video.
So why am I talking about such an old video now?
Because Pikotaro, the man from that video, collaborated with Kudo Pan, a bakery company based in Aomori Prefecture, and made a limited Aomori bread.
Its name is:
Pan Pineapple Apple Pan.

So, why did this collaboration happen?
Actually, that shiny gold man, Pikotaro, is a comedian from Aomori Prefecture.
To be more accurate, “Pikotaro” is the character name he used in that video.
He usually works under the name Kosaka Daimaou.
I have the impression that many people from Aomori tend to be modest.
At least, that is how I feel.
But Pikotaro is different.
He is a man who managed to make his face known, even just a little, around the world.
So, this is a collaboration between Pikotaro, our Aomori shooting star, and Kudo Pan, a local bakery loved by people in Aomori.
Now, let me introduce the bread.
It contains pineapple cream with pieces of pineapple fruit.
In other words, this bread pushes the pineapple flavor with refreshing confidence.
You may be wondering:
“Then where did the apple go?”
Actually, the apple element is in the appearance of the bread.

It might be a little hard to tell, but the outside of the bread is shaped like an apple.
It even has something that looks like an apple stem.
As for the taste…
Well.
It is sweet.
Pineapple sweet.
It is honestly good, but if you ask me, “Would you buy it again and again?”
I would probably smile and gently avoid answering.
My honest impression is that it is the perfect kind of product to buy as a funny little conversation topic.
After writing this much, I started wondering whether people who want to try it can still buy it.
So I checked the official Kudo Pan website to see if it was still being sold.
But I could not find it.
So maybe the collaboration has already ended.
Oh no.
But I had already taken photos, and I had already written this much of the article.
So, because I hate wasting things, I decided to post it anyway.
Thank you very much to anyone who read this far.
By the way, I do not know whether Pikotaro planned this or not, but apples are Aomori Prefecture’s most famous specialty.
This is important.
Please remember that before you go.
