A Night Aboard a Stationary Hayabusa After the Aomori Nebuta Festival
Shocked by the price of hotels during the Aomori Nebuta Festival—or simply in love with Shinkansen trains? This unusual one-night event may be worth a look.
There is one important warning, however: this is a special railway experience, not a budget hotel or conventional accommodation.
JR East will open a stationary E5 Series Hayabusa at Shin-Aomori Station as a late-night railway space for one night only.
Officially titled Premium Time on the Shinkansen in Shin-Aomori, the event will take place from Sunday, August 2, to the morning of Monday, August 3, 2026—the opening night of the Aomori Nebuta Festival.
After the excitement of the festival begins to settle, participants will travel one stop from Aomori Station to Shin-Aomori Station and spend the rest of the night aboard the Hayabusa.
The train will remain at the station, so it will not take passengers anywhere. Instead, guests can enjoy the unusual atmosphere of an E5 Series Shinkansen after regular passenger services have ended.
For railway fans, that may be the most exciting part. A train that normally carries passengers rapidly across northern Japan will become a quiet and slightly surreal space, with no destination or arrival time to worry about.

Event Schedule
Check-in will take place in front of the Shinkansen ticket gates on the second floor of Shin-Aomori Station.
- 11:00 p.m.: Check-in opens
- 11:40 p.m.: Boarding begins
- 11:50 p.m.: Final check-in
- From boarding until 4:50 a.m.: Free time aboard the E5 Series Shinkansen
- 4:50 a.m.: Event ends and participants leave the train
Participants will not be able to exit through the Shinkansen ticket gates before 4:50 a.m. Anyone joining the event should therefore be prepared to remain inside the event area until morning.

Women-only and general carriages will be available for individual participants, while groups will be assigned to dedicated group carriages.

All prices include tax. Seats cannot be selected in advance and will be assigned at check-in.
Participants cannot move between the women-only, general and group-only carriages.
The listed prices apply to elementary-school-age children and older. Preschool children may participate free of charge and are not included in the group headcount. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Bring Your Own Midnight Snacks
Food and drinks may be brought onto the train, so guests are free to pack their favorite snacks, a late-night meal or something for an early breakfast.
At check-in, JR East will also give each eligible participant one complimentary set containing bread and apple juice. Preschool children will not receive this set.
The official announcement does not say where the juice comes from. However, as someone born and raised in Aomori, I believe that if apple juice is being handed out in Aomori, it must surely be made with Aomori apples.
I am willing to stake my Aomori soul on it.
Add some snacks bought after the festival, and enjoying apple juice inside a quiet Hayabusa could become a wonderfully strange and memorable summer night.
This Is a Railway Experience, Not a Hotel
Although the event continues through the night, it is not a hotel, sleeper train or regular accommodation service.
No bedding will be provided, and the lights inside the train will remain on throughout the event.
The seats are ordinary Shinkansen seats rather than beds or private sleeping compartments. The train will also remain at Shin-Aomori Station throughout the event.
This experience is therefore designed for people who want to enjoy the novelty and atmosphere of spending several hours inside a Hayabusa—not for those expecting a comfortable night’s sleep.
It may not be ideal for travelers with limited stamina or families with very young children. Boarding begins late at night, the lights will stay on, and no one can exit through the Shinkansen gates until 4:50 a.m.
Before booking, consider carefully whether you and anyone traveling with you will be comfortable spending the entire night in these conditions.
What to Do Between the Festival and Check-In
On August 2, the Aomori Nebuta procession is scheduled to run from 7:00 p.m. until around 9:30 p.m., according to the official festival information.
Because check-in does not begin until 11:00 p.m., participants will have approximately an hour and a half to fill after the procession.
You could use that time to enjoy central Aomori at night, find something to eat or take a short walk before heading to Shin-Aomori.
However, there is another important local warning: trains leaving Aomori Station after the festival can become extremely crowded.
If you try to travel immediately after the procession, expect packed platforms and busy carriages.
Aomori Station and Shin-Aomori Station have similar names, but they are separate stations. They are only one stop apart by train, but you should decide in advance whether to travel immediately after the festival or wait for the first wave of passengers to ease.
During the Nebuta Festival, additional festival services may operate, and train schedules can differ from those on an ordinary day. Do not rely entirely on a regular timetable or a route-planning result you checked several days earlier. Research the journey carefully and check the latest schedule for the exact date on which you will travel.

Tickets are available through the JRE MALL Ticket JR East Aomori Business Headquarters shop. A JRE MALL account is required to make a booking.
Sales run from 10:00 a.m. on July 23 until noon on July 30, 2026, Japan Standard Time. Sales may close earlier if all places are booked.
For anyone who has ever wished that the final Shinkansen of the day could linger just a little longer, this may be a fitting—and very unusual—way to end the opening night of one of Japan’s greatest summer festivals.
